Expectations of a Research Associate: Demonstrates full knowledge in assigned areas and is an experienced sole contributor. Work with investment professionals, broadly contributes to the investment group and the success of the overall research process. Conducts research and works closely with other members of the Investment Group Information Resource (IGIR) team. Independently conceptualizes research questions and significantly contributes to the research process through assembling and reviewing data, conducting statistical analyses and researching industry groups and individual securities. Prepares internal presentations and summaries of investment meetings. Works with investment analysts to help make Capital’s research process more original and productive through the thorough analysis of economic, financial and industry trends. Makes research contributions in partnership with investment professionals that add value to the boarder investment unit.


Primary responsibilities/essential functions:


Conducts research and analysis in partnership with investment professionals to help evaluate investment opportunities.

  • Creates and maintains a variety of computer spreadsheets and financial models (company, industry/sector, macro/country financial models).
  • Collects industry and company data through a variety of channels, including sell-side research firms, internal and external databases, trade publications, online sources, regulatory filings and sometimes interviews with industry sources.
  • Reviews and organizes data, synthesizes information, identifies trends and helps investment analysts to analyze and interpret company and industry data and trends.
  • Prepares background research for investment analysts and assists with portfolio analysis.
  • Stays up-to-date on industry trends, company news and regulatory issues.
  • Determines how to best analyze data and identify trends.
  • Works collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Prepares internal presentations and summaries of investment meetings.
  • Attends regular investment meetings, company sponsored events, retreats, presentations, and conferences and summarizes key points for investment professionals.
  • Writes company summaries and content for investment reports and works with analysts on internal presentations. May draft investment notes or publish own writing.
  • Works on special research projects as needed to help support Capital’s investment professionals.
  • Attends company sponsored events, retreats, presentations, conferences and meetings as needed.
  • Attends and potentially lead broker and company meetings as needed.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.


Provides training and oversight for IGIR team in Los Angeles:

  • Provides training and leverage technical skills by coaching and mentoring other associates. 
  • Coordinates daily workflow and provides technical guidance in areas such as financial modeling, valuation, data analysis and data visualization.
  • Helps manage daily workflow amongst the team of research associates.
  • Assists with the hiring process for the early career IGIR program and help on-board new associates 



  • Bachelor’s degree required (Finance, Economics, or Accounting preferred)  
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of investment research experience.
  • Highly competent in investment markets, financial analysis, valuation, and accounting including reviewing and interpreting reports and financial statements.
  • Demonstrates ability to collaborate and develop/maintain relationships inside and outside the organization to enable effective completion of business objectives.
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills and effective investment writing skills. 
  • High proficiency with spreadsheet applications in Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, e.g. Python and R are a plus.
