Translation & Business Research Associate


This position has as its main area of focus the provision of support for the research functions of as well as translation and interpreting services for the Shanghai Office.                


The range of duties aimed at supporting the research functions of Shanghai office associates, investment professionals and visitors and the research library includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Provide translation and interpretation support when needed.
  • Gather information from internal and external data sources. Conduct directed research queries and provide translation of primary research materials.  Attend meetings as directed, together with or on behalf of associates. Generate reports from those meetings as required.
  • Manage production of the Shanghai office’s publications, notably the Shanghai Perspectives and SHO Newsflash.
  • Generate and maintain spreadsheets.  Oversee and maintain databases, extracting and analyzing data from research services.
  • Arrange meetings using own resources that maximize research outcomes for associates as directed.
  • Manage the Shanghai office library and related services.

The position will interact extensively with relevant counterparts in company offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, the U.S. as well as visiting associates.  Travel within China will be required on a regular basis; and outside China on an occasional basis.


Hiring Criteria:

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative data analytical skills.
  • Language proficiency: native Mandarin Chinese; fluent oral and written English.
  • Highly competent computer skills. Prior experience using Excel, Powerpoint, Tableau, and basic programming.
  • Familiarity with electronic research services, including Wind.
  • Familiarity with translation and interpretation practices.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to relate well with people at all levels in the organization.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with local practices relating to government and corporate entities.
  • Flexibility to handle multiple tasks in a fast–paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.


Job Details:


With general supervision, the business research & translation associate provides support for associates within the Shanghai Office as well as travelling associates. Also responds to China-related translation and research tasks on behalf of Capital Group associates. Self-starter, works independently, referring questions/clarifications to managers or other appropriate resources.

Technical Skills

  • Understands and translates accurately from Chinese to English and vice-versa in both oral and written form at the technical, professional, cultural and social level.
  • Creates formats for routine graphs, slides, tables, charts, databases, forms and spreadsheets.
  • Uses PCs and network applications to input and extract data.  May assist others on computer applications.  Comfortable learning new applications and systems. Prior experience with Excel, Powerpoint, Tableau, basic programming, etc.
  • Utilizes and manages electronic research databases to gather, download and analyze information and manipulate data.
  • Possesses strong math skills (numeracy).
  • Possesses strong detail orientation by checking data and/or work for accuracy.
  • Creates and maintains specialized reports (spreadsheets and documents) using general knowledge of subject matter and PC applications.
  • Maintains and modifies a database.
  • Takes initiative to further develop technical knowledge to creatively maximize productivity.
