Role summary

We are recruiting for a Legal Counsel to join our Asia Pacific Legal & Compliance team and based in Singapore.  This is an opportunity to join one of the largest asset managers in the world.  Capital Group is an evolving business in a highly regulated environment; this team is involved in guiding decisions that will make a major impact on the business.  The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting this effort in the Asia Pacific region.


The Asia Pacific Legal & Compliance team currently has 12 members situated in Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. It is a highly collaborative group, and the candidate will work closely with members across the team as well as associates from various business areas and locations. 


Primary responsibilities/essential functions (applicable to all responsibility areas):


  • Provide day to day legal support for multiple business areas across the entities and businesses within Asia Pacific (e.g., portfolio management, trading, and investment operations) by providing comprehensive legal advice, solutions and support in all aspects of the asset management business. This includes reviewing fund documentations, applications for fund registrations, distribution agreements, subscription agreements and investment management agreements.
  • Review other corporate agreements including vendor contracts and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Interacts with external counsel, auditors and regulators.
  • Work with Compliance, Risk and the business to prevent, mitigate and control legal risks
  • Work with Compliance to provide day to day advisory support to the business
  • Advice on financial services and non-financial services regulations (such as data protection) which are applicable to the business.
  • Work with compliance to analyzes new regulations and impact of implementation to business practices. Proposes appropriate solutions in response to new regulations and proposes implementation strategies.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

Core requirements

  • Experience at a top ranked law firm or in-house with a financial services or investment management firm
  • Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, organizational and strategic thinking skills
  • Understanding of how to balance legal risks with business objectives and successfully get projects completed
  • Fluency in English; Chinese-language (both spoken and written) will be highly regarded.
